Red Cross receives $300,000 for Africa
The New Zealand Red Cross has received $300,000' from the Live Aid for Africa Trust. It has already committed the money to international Red Cross projects in Africa.
The projects include medical supplies for Angola, feeding centre programmes and training of local staff in Ethiopia, artificial limbs for conflict victims in Mozambique, and farming tools and seeds for Sudan. Mr Jerry Talbot, secre-tary-general of the New Zealand Red Cross, said, “The people who gave so generously to ‘Live Aid’ must know what essentials of life have been provided
by them through the Red Cross.” Miss Wendy Woodward, a Wellington nurse, is the first New Zealand Red Cross relief delegate to go to Africa as a result of “Live Aid.” Miss Woodward, who left
fer the Darfur region of Sudan on Thursday, said, “I am going with a roll up your sleeves and get into it attitude. I have got no grand illusions of saving the world, just the desire to be a part of the relief lifeline.” Mr Talbot said that sending relief aid to Africa was not new to the New Zealand Red Cross Society, but “Live Aid” had meant a considerable increase in contributions.
