Status quo likely in Waimairi poll
Waimairi residents are voting overwhelmingly to retain the status quo in a questionnaire about amalgamation options for Christchurch’s local bodies. The Waimairi District Council sent out 25,000 questionnaires last week-end and so far had had replies from about 11,500 voters, said the council’s information officer, Mrs Gael Brooks. “About 10,000 of these replies have been collated
and the response so far is overwhelmingly in favour of the status quo,” she said. The questionnaire had
asked voters to rank three amalgamation options in order of preference — maintaining the status quo, a two-city plan, or a onecity plan. Exact figures for each option would not be available until all the replies had been collated. The number of replies meant about 25 per cent of Waimairi’s 40,000 voters had so far responded, Mrs Brooks said.
The poll officially closed today, but Mrs Brooks said the council would continue to accept replies next week.
