Cinema advertising
JSir, - W. J. C. Royds (“The Press,” August 27) accurately described a recent programme at Savoy 2— the second half a G.A. film, the first half advertisements, mostly on liquor. One of these advertisements was clearly promoting over-indulgence in alcohol and was specifically targeted at the young male macho, the very group which demonstrates daily its inability to cope with alcohol. In promoting alcohol in this fashion, the liquor industry displays antisocial and irresponsible behaviour and it seems that rigid Government control of liquor advertising is needed. — Yours, etc.,
D. C. HEATON. August 27, 1985.
Sir,—l agree completely with all your correspondents complaining about the overwhelming liquor advertising at the Savoy Two. The mediocre “short” in the first half of the programme I went to was drowned in the flood of beer and wine advertisements. While happily admitting to taking these particular drugs on suitable occasions, I object to their being pushed on this scale. The situation was made worse by the film, “A Private Function,” being one rated suitable for children: the liquor ads certainly were not. — Yours, etc.,
BILL ROSENBERG. August 29, 1985.
