Yacht found drifting near Fiji

FA Auckland The police believe a yacht found drifting off an island reef north of Fiji belonged to a German who left Coromandel about a month ago.

The 12m yacht Janiwha was found abandoned off Udu Point, eight kilometres north of Vanua Levu island on Wednesday afternoon. A Fiji police cutter was towing it to Suva and was expected in port last evening. The police said only clothing and a camera were found on board.

There was no sign of life and no apparent reason why the vessel had been abandoned.

New Zealand police have discounted suggestions that the vessel may be the missing yacht Ouvea, sought in connection with the bombing of the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior.
