Good finish for second to Lord Paul in smart time at Washdyke two starts back. Should be well suited to the mobile conditions here and looks the one to beat. SATURDAY ASHBURTON NOBLE RIVER (Race 1), ch g, 8 yrs, by Noble Bijou—Gay River; trained at Wingatui by H. T. Anderton. Has done most of his racing short of this distance but has won at 2000 m. Established his class by winning a Winter Cup at Riccarton, and showed he was close to his best again when third behind Chook a Rook and Bi Noble at Oamaru last week. AVONDALE AVON TIME (Race 5), b g, 4 yrs, by Avon Valley—Ym Seng; trained at Takanini by Mrs P. O’Brien. Has looked promising in just three starts to date, just being run down last time at Ellerslie on August 14. Hard to go past in this. POVERTY BAY KINMOSS (Race 7), b m, 5 yrs, by Moss Trooper—Gold Kin; trained at Tuhikaramea by G. Rogerson. Held out Any Pound well on Wednesday and likely to be even better for the run for the second day. Hard to go past. WANGANUI MR SHOGUN (Race 8), b h, 4 yrs, by Vice Regal —Rosie’s Girl; trained at Te Aroha by K. Opie. Racing solidly. Just outfinished last time at Paeroa this distance (1600 m after leading and well placed to go one better in this.
