Railway takes title in final round

A 7-1 win over South Brighton ensured retention of the A grade inter-club badminton title for Railway I in the final round of competition at the Skellerup Hall on Saturday. A margin of 6-2 would have put Railway beyond the reach of its only rival for the championship, Bryndwr-Y.M.C.A. In the event, Railway went a match better. Only two matches went beyond straight games. Graham Sercombe dropped the second game against Neil Bams, and later, while partnering Rosey Askew, went down to the doughty Barns and Valda Adams, 815, in the first game of the No. 1 mixed doubles, before taking control. Bryndwr’s prospects were always slim. It had to beat Hagley I by a large margin, and hope Railway I had come to grief. A 5-3 win over Hagley was insufficient to give Bryndwr the title. Mark Reid, a little surprisingly, went down to Mike Porter, 13-15, 14-17, in the second men’s singles; Diane Lonie lost to Liz Henson, by a more convincing margin; and the pair combined to go down to Porter and Miss Henson in the second mixed doubles, in a longer tussle. Hagley II completed a miserable season by going down, 5-3, to Railway 11.

David Bell recorded his third singles win, then combined with Ken Julian to win the men’s doubles, and also with Elaine Parker to overcome Grant Andrew and Karen Rogers.

Gill Barns was the most successful of the Railway team, picking up three victories. A considerably weakened Christchurch I team was well beaten by the Christchurch II team, 7-1. Julie Anderson suffered the only loss, at the hands of Karen Willson.
