Greenpeace launches ship

NZPA-Reuter Hamburg

The environmental organisation, Greenpeace, whose flagship Rainbow Warrior was blown up in New Zealand last month, launched a new vessel and sent her on a mission to help protect the Antarctic.

A spokesman said Greenpeace wanted to focus public attention on the risks

threatening the Antarctic which he alleged was in danger of being ruined by large-scale commercial exploitation of its mineral reserves.

“For once, we want to save a continent before it is too late,” Mr Wolfgang Fischer, a biologist, told a news conference.

The new vessel, called

Greenpeace, will stop at New Zealand on her way to the Antarctic where she is due in December. Mr Fischer said four Greenpeace members would stay in the Antarctic for about three months to register and if possible prevent violations of the Antarctic Treaty, signed by 32 countries in 1957. It will expire in 1991.
