Two on multiple burglary counts

Bail was not sought for two men each facing multiple charges of burglary, involving property valued at about $50,000, who appeared before Judge Sheehan in the District Court yesterday. Paul Wyatt Harding, aged 22 (Mr D. C. Fitzgibbon), and Brian Joseph Foster, aged 23 (Mr G. D. Trainor), both unemployed, were remanded in custody to August 22. No pleas were entered.

Harding faces 26 charges and Foster 29 charges.

The police say the alleged offences at properties round Christchurch occurred over the last five months.

Sergeant C. M. Maling said further charges against the two men were pending. ROBBERY CHARGE

Bail was set at $2OOO for a man who denied a charge of robbing a man of $lO on August 2. Clinton Joseph Tonihi, aged 22 (Mr K. J. Grave), was remanded to December 10 for a defended hearing. STOLE GROCERIES

A woman who with an associate, wheeled a trolley loaded with $227 worth of groceries out of a Shirley supermarket without paying, told the police she did not know what she was doing, said Sergeant Maling. Faye Brenda Lewis, aged 26, a solo parent (Mrs D. M. Shirtcliff), offered no explanation. Sergeant Maling said the defendant was under the influence of drink or drugs and claimed she had not

slept for the previous two nights.

Lewis admitted the offence, which occurred on the morning of June 6.

She was convicted and released on probation for two years during which time she must live and work where directed. PERIODIC DETENTION Brett Peter Savelkoel, aged 20, a labourer, was sentenced to periodic detention for five months for a theft of a $4OOO motor-cycle. Savelkoel told the police he had used the machine for riding on dirt tracks at week-ends.

The motor-cycle, stolen from a city car-park, was found in a garage at the defendant’s .address. Its appearance had been changed and part of the exhaust had been cut off to make the bike noisier. Savelkoel chose not to have legal representation.
