Alpine team to get award

PA Timaru The alpine rescue team at Mount Cook will receive its International Award for Valour this evening from the Minister of Lands, Mr Wetere.

The award, from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, refers particularly to the rescue of Messrs Phil Doole and Mark Inglis from near the summit of Mount Cook in 1982.

It is the first time that the award has been made to New Zealanders and it is also the first time it has been made for rescue work. Normally it is in recognition

of outstanding achievements in conservation.

The presentation will be made by Mr Wetere because the 30-strong rescue team is employed by the Lands and Survey Department.

Citation to the award describes the rescue of Messrs Inglis and Doole, who were members of the team, as an outstanding act of bravery and skill.

“The skill and daring of the rescue team is in the highest traditions of National Park professionals who often work at considerable personal risks and sacrifice to ensure the safety of park visitors,” it says.
