Shortages of timber forecast
Wellington reporter
Wood volumes available from State forests in Canterbury will increase steadily from 1995 until 2000, according to the draft State forest harvesting strategy. Until then, volumes are expected to decrease in 1988, and again during the period 1991 to 1995. By the year 2008, however, State wood supplies could double to 400,000 cubic metres a year in the Canterbury region. Shortages predicted during the next 10 years are a result of losses of mature trees in the 1975 storm in Canterbury. Copies of the draft strategy are available from the Conservator of Forests in Christchurch.
