Survey of traffic
A close watch will be kept on traffic crossing railway lines in Christchurch on Tuesday morning. Almost 100 secondary school pupils will count cars, trucks, buses, cycles and pedestrians crossing railway tracks during the peak traffic period. The survey, being done for the Canterbury United Council, will provide essential data for transport planning, says the council’s manager of transport planning, Mr Brian Hasell. However, the benefits of
the exercise would not all be one-way, he said. “The pupils themselves get a practical lesson in civic planning as part of their social studies programme.” Pupils from Linwood High School, Riccarton High School and St Andrew’s College will do the survey. Results from a similar survey in 1978 will be used to determine changes in traffic volumes and the types of traffic crossing the tracks.
