Science training lacking

PA Wellington The education system fails to provide enough people to identify the needs, carry out, and apply the results of science and technology, says the National Research Advisory Council. The annual report of the council, tabled in Parliament, said the lack of people equally applied to old-established sciences such as geology and newer ones such as information technology. It was necessary for secondary education to produce school-leavers with basic skills in numeracy and who were aware of the place of science and technology in the modern world. University departments also needed to reassess continually the extent to which their graduates were adequately trained for subsequent careers. Some sectors found that substantial retraining was necessary while others found the supply of graduates was only a fraction of that required.
