Official report, prices

Fine wool prices fell 2.5 to 5 per cent at yesterday’s Christchurch wool sale but crossbred fleece prices remained generally unchanged from the levels of the previous day. The official report, issued by the Christchurch Wool Brokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the Council of Wool Exporters, compared the fine wool prices with the last fine wool sale, on June 27. Fine Halfbred (27 micron) was nominally down 7 per cent, 28 micron was down 5 per cent, and 29 to 32 micron fleece was down 2.5 to 5 per cent. Compared with the Timaru and Invercargill sale on Thursday, medium crossbred fleece was par to sellers’ favour,

strong crossbred was inclined in sellers’ favour, second-shear was generally minus 2.5 per cent, crutchings and pieces were up 2.5 per cent and bellies and oddments were in buyers’ favour. The competition was described as well spread with a . keen interest and the main buyers represented Eastern Europe anti New Zealand mills supported by Western Europe and the Far East The offering was 17,641 bales with a further 221 bales on behalf of the Wool Board. Pre-lamb fleece wool comprised the bulk of the offering and in most cases length was average but some lots showed drought effects, being short and dusty. Otherwise colour was very good with many lots being of high yield, according to the brokers. Second-shear was well represented and contained many attractive lots for length, colour and yield.
