Debating contest
Andrea McKay, aged 16, of Marlborough Girls’ High School, opens for the affirmative in the South Island final of the secondary schools’ debating contest in the Chamber of Commerce building, Christchurch, yesterday. Her fellow team members were Lisa Helman and Rachelle Ham. Behind her is the team from John McGlashan College, Dunedin, who are (from left) John Danesh, James Reid and David Mills (obscured). They successfully opposed the motion “that hypocrisy is one of our nation’s characteristics.”
The team from John McGlashan College will meet a team from Wanganui Collegiate, in round eight of the Southern Zone contest. The national final will be held in Dunedin on October 9, between the winners of the Southern and the Northern zones.
The contest was arranged by New Zealand Jaycees in association with the Westpac Banking Corporation.
