Fifty enter jet race

Fifty jet boaters have entered the annual Glasskraft Trophy race, which begins from Kairaki on the Waimakariri River this morning. The trophy is awarded for fastest time. Competition will be held also in the final of the three-race Savage Marine series and the fourth of 10 races in the $lO,OOO Businessworld Computers series. The pre-race favourite is Mike Pooley, a Motunau

fisherman who will be in his new boat, a Hamilton 171 with a 22deg. hull. The alloy hull should assist Pooley’s control at high speeds, and he already leads the Savage Marine Trophy by about 7min from Peter Muff. Angus McFarlane will be trying out his new Kwick Kraft tunnel for the first time in competition in a bid to reduce his two-point deficit to Pooley in the Businessworld contest.
