Good day for pilots

NZPA staff correspondent London The Christchurch glider pilot, Ray Lynskey, finished second yesterday to maintain his lead in the open class at the world championships in Reiti, Italy. Lynskey started the 657 km course with a lead of nearly 200 points in the over-all standings. Although points for yesterday will not be published until today, Lynskey’s performance was good enough to safeguard his lead, said a member of the New Zealand team’s support crew. The other three New Zealand pilots also had a good

day. Terry de Lore and Bruce Drake, both of Christchurch, finished eleventh and eighteenth respectively in the 15m class. Before the race de Lore was placed about twentieth and Drake thirtieth, so yesterday’s performances over a 340 km course should push them up the standings. The Hastings pilot, Peter Lyons, failed to complete the 408 km course in the standard class. Because of the conditions just three of the 37 pilots reached the finish. Lyons should score enough points to improve on his twenty-fifth placing over all.
