Liquid Lightning to win Kurow Cup

By.

JEFF SCOTT

Liquid Lightning and Samson, both in fine early season form at trials, promise a keen clash in the $6OOO D. B. Kurow Cup at Oamaru on Monday.

The former was unfortunate to be born in the same year as Roydon Glen, otherwise he could well have been among the leading four-year-olds if raced extensively last term.

His Kerrytown trainer, Richard Brosnan, always maintained that the Honkin Andy—Lurex gelding would be better served by time and has adopted a patient policy with him, starting him only 10 times last season for four wins and six placings.

This season, with age and maturity, Liquid Lightning should quickly reach his way to the best classes.

After winning at the Waimate meeting at Oamaru on December 8, he was spelled before being brought up again for the Canterbury Parte Winter Cup over 3200 m in May, finishing fourth to Likely Lord, Lady El and Freightman. A trial win at Washdyke last month, albeit in a slow 3min 39.45, and another at Washdyke on Wednesday when he finished second to Netherton after starting from 60m, should have him in the right order to open his five-year-old campaign on a winning note.

Samson has been in fine form at trials held at Ashburton, winning twice in better than 3min Ils (2400 m in recent weeks and sprinting home his last 800 m in better than 59s on both occasions. One of last season’s leading three-year-olds, he is being pointed to the D. B. Superstar Series at

New Brighton in September but is obviously coming to hand quickly and should take beating on Monday. Chataway, Aran Blaze and Spangled Lord, all strong finishers in the same heat at the Addington trials on Wednesday, should be prominent, while Rosin, a speedy free-legged pacer, is capable of making matters interesting with a safe beginning from the ace.

The consistent Counsel Bay may gain an overdue return to winning form in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the FTC Big Softie Pace, also the second leg of the T.A.B. treble and the T.A.B. trifecta event.

In a weak line-up, Garrison’s Image, on the strength of a useful second to Venus Boy at Waskdyke last Monday, and Golden Wave, better than most here but not foolproof from a stand start, look the dangers.
