Rowing boost

The New Zealand coxless four, which won the rowing gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics last year, has received substantial assistance in its bid to add the world championship gold medal to its list of achievements later this month.

The team has received sponsorship from the Swiss pharmaceutical firm Sandoz Pharma, to assist with its preparation for the championships. The four, in return, will be used to promote awareness of asthma and its prevention.

The head of the respiratory division of Sandoz, Mary Finlay, said asthmatics should be encouraged to take up exercise, particularly water sports. Consequently the firm decided that by promoting the rowers it might encourage young people in particular to take up a sport.

The coxless four is Ross Tong, Les O’Connell, Shane O’Brien and Keith Trask.

A member of the New Zealand eight, Nigel Atherford, is an asthmatic whose condition has been helped by rowing.
