Sir,—Vernon Wilkinson (July 30) cites an advertisement from the “prestigious” “Christian Science Monitor” as giving figures proving NATO, has more military hardware than the Warsaw Pact. He doesn’t say who placed this advertisement, but asks what “proA.N.Z.U.S. scaremongers” have to say about his irrefutable proof. Here are some figures from the Pentagon publication, “Soviet Military Power”: N.A.T.O. 93 troop divisions, Warsaw Pact 176; N.A.T.O. 14,400 tanks, Warsaw Pact 46,000; N.A.T.O. 775 helicopters, Warsaw Pact 960; N.A.T.O. 11,500 artillery pieces, Warsaw Pact 35,000. These figures do not include the Soviets’ eastern forces, which are sometimes even stronger than those of the Warsaw Pact. The figures also showed a similar Soviet advantage in naval and nuclear weaponry. Statistics can lie, but the point is who is more aggressive, N.A.T.O. or Russia? Just as I fear gangsters more than the police, I fear Russia more than America.—Yours, etc.,

T. R. LOUDON. Kaiapoi, July 30, 1985.
