Arms race
Sir, — The insane development of increasingly sophisticated weapons is well highlighted in Henry Gottlieb’s article of July 31 on the “Star Wars” strategy. He reports that many scientists involved in developing the first atomic bomb are opposed to the “Star Wars” project. They know from sad experience that every advance in high-tech weaponry heightens our fear, danger and vulnerability. Historically, every arms build-up has been followed by a major war. Centuries of militarism have contributed nothing to building a peaceful planet. Military intelligence is a contradiction in terms. Wars will cease when men refuse to fight and move toward mutual understanding which leads to mutual co-operation and peace; humanity’s only way to survival. All we need is the personal and political will to dismantle the military edifice, reversing the vicious spiral drawing us into the dark and violent vortex of global destruction. — Yours, etc., MARTY CAROLL.
