Orange roughy catch a record

PA Dunedin A record catch of more than 1600 tonnes of orange roughy was delivered to the Fletcher Fishing, Ltd, Dunedin processing factory recently by the Otago Galliard. The trawler, New Zealand’s biggest deep-sea freezer vessel, made its catch in 20 days on the Chatham Rise, 800 km from Dunedin. The catch is valued at about $3.5 million. The company’s managing director, Mr Eric Henry, said the success of the

trawler and her 36 crew “clearly demonstrates New Zealanders’ ability to operate deep-water fishing vessels successfully.” “Otago Galliard and its sister ship Otago Buccaneer are fishing the deepest waters ' commercially trawled anywhere in the world,” he said. Most of the factory’s production is exported to the United States, Australia and Europe. Both trawlers broke another record on Tuesday when they jointly caught more than 200 tonnes of orange roughy in one day.
