British yacht’s win confirmed
NZPA staff correspondent Cowes, Isle of Wight Britain's success in the Admiral’s Cup storm-hit channel race was confirmed yesterday when an international jury dismissed a protest against the handicap winner, Jade. Australia’s Challenge protested over a port versus starboard tack at the outset of the race. Challenge was later dismasted and one of the 12 retirements from the 54-boat Admiral’s Cup fleet. Jade, steered by the Olympic double gold medallist, Rodney Pattison, was cleared yesterday. With Jade first and Panda second on corrected time, in a race hit by gales, Britain
jumped past New Zealand into second place over all after three of the five races in the series. The Whitbread round-the-world yacht, Lion New Zealand, was third across the line, and sixth on handicap in a class separate from the Admiral’s Cup fleet. The United States maxi yacht. Nirvana, was first to finish the channel race, completing the 350 km in 22hr 4min, and won the maxi section on handicap. Lion’s race time was 23:10:26, corrected to 31:39:36 on handicap. Nirvana’s corrected time was 29:50:42, with the round-the-vw>rld racer, Atlantic Priv-' ateerf second. /
