Honours to Black Sheep
PA Auckland Black Sheep, the 17 metre Lidgard design sailed by Alistair Shanks, took line honours in record time in the Auckland to Mooloolaba Ocean race, finishing at 5.50 a.m. yesterday —275 km ahead of the nearest competitor. Shanks, representing the Nelson Yacht Club, sailed the 2200 km course in 183 h 50m 335, breaking the race record set by the Murray Ross Flyer, Urban Cowboy in 1983. While Shanks and his crew had to battle galeforce winds for most of the race, light conditions off the Queensland coast yesterday made it unlikely that any other yachts in the fleet could finish in time to take the over-all handicap honours.
On yesterday’s positions, the Whangarei entry, Renegade (Trevor Smith) had 401 km miles to sail and had to average nearly seven knots to arrive in Mooloolaba by 7 a.m. today to take the handicap win. Domino II (Ken Batkin), the second-placed yacht, still had 275 km to sail to the Queensland coast holiday resort at 4 p.m., and was not expected to finish the race until late this morning. Sequoiah II (John Clark, Wellington) had 580 km to sail and was out of the running.
Horizon (Warwick Fromm) was the leading second division boat on handicap and had 770 km to sail.
