Wider Inter-Doms?

NZPA staff correspondent Sydney Horses from Canada and the United States could run in the next Inter-Dominion harness racing series in Brisbane, as a result of a move by Australian customs this week. The 1986 series, which will be the golden jubilee InterDominions, has been' granted “special event” status, meaning that horses brought in from the Northern Hemisphere will not be subjected to 20 per cent duty. The Australian Trotting Council’s chief executive, Mr John Peck, said that the move lifted a final barrier to northern horses contesting the series, and the 1986 InterDominion was set to become the first major international horse race in this part of the

world. The next step, he said, was to get a race track set aside in Canada for use as a quarantine base, where horses intended for the Brisbane series would be able to remain in full work during their month-long isolation. “I hope that this season we will definitely have one North American horse, but I expect about six nominations,” Mr Peck said. “We could get one each from Canada and the United States, but if we just got one for this series I would fee happy.” Mr Peck said the 1987 InterDominion series in Christchurch could have an even better chance of getting international horses because of New Zealand’s different customs regulations.
