Canterbury beaten in basketball

By] Cnnuo

FRANK DUGGAN

Converse Canterbury threw away two handy leads and lost the semi-final of the Countrywide Basketball League Championship at the Wellington Show and Sport Centre last evening. It was beaten 116-100 by the defending champions, Exchequer Saints (Wellington). Saints led by only two points at half-time, 52-50, and Canterbury had much the better of the game at this stage. However, Saints recovered to lead, 59-54, after two minutes but Canterbury regained the lead at the end of the third quarter with an 81-76 advantage. But from then on it was all downhill for Canterbury. Nothing went right and to make matters worse the tall forward, Eddie McLeod, was fouled out with six minutes left and was quickly followed by John Hill. With these two big men gone Canterbury had no chance.

Canterbury had a handy lead of 28-22 at the end of the first quarter. However, there was no real authority in the back court and the Rams never looked settled against the driving of the big Saints forwards,

Angelo Hill and Peter Roscoe. Roscoe was outstanding in the first half. As in the final last' year, he completely dominated the defensive boards. It was Hill’s turn in the second. He wreaked havoc with an ever-increasing Canterbury defence. Apart from one or two questionable referee’s decisions against Canterbury its greatest flaw was a complete lack of rebounding. It was virtually nil and this more than anything cost Canterbury a place in this evening’s final. DB Auckland, winners of the earlier semi-final, will now meet Saints for the third time in as many years in the final. DB won in 1982 and 1983 and Saints won last year. Top score for Canterbury was McLeod with 28 points but again he was lacking in his workrate in defence. John Rademakers (24), and Clyde Huntley (17) were other double figure scorers. Hill scored 43 points for Saints and took 24 rebounds. A fellow American, Kenny McFadden got 27, Rick Wineeral2 and Roscoe 11.

It was a disappointing ending for a creditable Canterbury season. Earlier report, back page.
