Public seminar on forests
By OLIVER RIDDELL in Wellington
A public seminar to discuss the next steps to be taken with native forests will be held in Wellington today. The seminar will discuss the establishment of a Nature conservancy—the proposed Heritage New Zealand—which has been a controversial suggestion for a number o£ reasons, mainly because it would break up the Forest Service. The seminar will look also at the question of native forests on private land.
It is being organised by the Native Forests Action Council, which urges people
to attend the seminar to hear “devastating analysis of the Forest Service’s economic-performance, and a debate on whether the Forest Service should survive or be severed at the stump.” A ruling by the State Services Commission has prevented Forest Service staff participating directly in the debate, and so the Institute of Foresters has been invited to represent the Forest Service and others in the forest industry. Guest speakers will include the Minister for the Environment, Mr Marshall, and the Commissioner for the Environment, Mr Ken Piddington.
