Skating ends at Lake Ida
The ice skating season at Lake Ida has ended almost, it seems, before it started. The president of the Lake Ida Winter Sports Association, Mr Bert Lyttle, was hoping that it would be a case of third time lucky after poor financial seasons in 1983 and last winter. But this season proved to be the worst on record. The association has been keeping records since 1948.
Mr Lyttle said yesterday that it seemed a long time
since the years of the big frosts. He can remember the best years, 1952 and 1957, when the entire lake was frozen for three months and to a depth of 35cm. In 1957, more that 3000 people were at the lake on one Sunday in mid-July, and 29 buses and 500 cars taxed parking facilities.
But those times seem well gone, and Mr Lyttle can only hope that next winter will bring sufficient ice to allow a full season of outdoor skating.
