Work of Amnesty International

Sir,—Those whose use of torture, political killings and imprisonment and the death penalty, have been exposed by Amnesty International have often tried to discredit it as the agent of an opposing political system. So it was no surprise to read M. Creel’s wild clairwabout Amnesty. He ought to

check his facts. Under its mandate Amnesty is simply not able to have any political bias — it cannot even accept financial contributions from any Government. It has worked against the use of the death penalty in the United States and investigated the use of summary detention by British forces in Northern Ireland. If M. Creel investigated his claims — and he is welcome to join Amnesty provided he abides by its apolitical stance — he would see that the organisation is concerned with the imprisonment, torture and killing of people who have not used or advocated violence under whatever system. — Yours, etc., PETER DOWLING, Chairperson, Canterbury University A.I. Group. July 31, 1985.
