Aid to Africa

Sir,—ln reply to D. A. Charlton (July 31), I have travelled through four African countries. My father has lived and worked in South Africa and Rhodesia. I have at least experienced some of the realities of Africa. South Africa is not simply black and white; there are many grey areas. I believe decisions on governing a country should be made by those in touch with the realities and complexities of the society. It is not for outsiders to pass judgment and interfere from a safe distance. Black and white — there is right and wrong on both sides. Surely they are best qualified to deal with it. Information you require regarding aid distribution is now appearing in the papers. A recent newspaper photograph showed abandoned aid on the docks in Ethiopia, the birds feeding on it. Again, with all the good will toward Africa, it is a shame so much of it is either misguided or mismanaged. — Yours, etc., ROSALIE OLAUSEN. July 31, 1985.
