Development work at Lyttelton
Sir,—The wisdom of the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s proposal to reclaim in the inner harbour has been scuttled once and for all by nature herself. The recent bad weather demonstrated only, too clearly the vital need of the safe and tranquil water of the inner harbour. Because of the weather the Nedlloyd Marseilles had to leave her outside berth and seek refuge outside the heads. However, the elements drove her back again, this time to the safety of the inner harbour. Already the inner harbour is very confined, especially for the safeimanoeuvring of large ships.
Nowhere on the east coast is there such a safe and sheltered area for shipping and for the board to proceed with its plan would amount to sabotage. The New Zealand Ports Authority must consider the facts very carefully and not grant the loan and so save the board from its own folly.—Yours, etc STAN HEMSLEY. July 31, 1985.
