National Party leadership
Sir,—L. Westney must be joking. Mr McLay will always be the “McLaytons’ leader” Sir Robert Muldoon so aptly described him as. The National Party remains divided and Mr McLay lacks both the strength and the credibility as leader to overcome it. Little more than a year ago he was as ardent a Muldoonist as any member of the National caucus. He is now repudiating so many of the Muldoon policies so fast that the electorate is wondering not only who the real leader is, but whether the National Party really exists at all any more. L. Westney himself has not so long ago been the author of enthusiastic pro-Muldoon letters in these columns, and now writes of “that political complaint known as Muldoonism.” Confused? So is the rest of the electorate, and they will want to see something better than a “McLaytons’ leader” before contemplating yet another do-nothing conservative National Government.—Yours, etc., D. J. O’ROURKE. July 31, 1985.
