Some Bird shows speed at Hastings

Special correspondent Hastings Pink Dazzler, Some Bird and Brigade of Guards worked well at the Hastings track yesterday morning, suggesting they could be to the fore at tomorrow’s Hawke’s Bay Hunt meeting. Fast work was done on the plough and No. 1 grass. The grass was very heavy but the plough had compacted and times on this track were quite fast for this time of the year. Pink Dazzler gave a glimpse of her speed by running 600 m on the plough in 36.65. This Crown Lease mare has won barrier trials in the past and could surprise in the First Montrose Maiden. Some Bird and Brigade of Guards recorded 50.2 s for 800 m, the last 600 m in 37.85. This was another good gallop and shows that Some Bird has freshened well since racing at Levin on July 17. She comes back to 1600 m in the Awanui Handicap and could go well. Brigade of Guards is a maiden galloper from Norval Temperton’s stable which shows promise. Exocet had one of his first serious runs since resuming. He ran 800 m on the plough, in partnership with Imperial Order, in 54.75, the last 600 m in 40.85. Exocet put on plenty of condition during his three week break but is starting to fine down nicely again. He wil begin a fresh campaign in a 1200 m sprint at Foxton on August 17. The Melbourne Cup is still his big mission this year. Nevada Prince and Frontal Belle worked late in the session, on the No. 1 grass. They ran 1000 m in Imin 13.15, the last 600 m in 43.95, with Nevada Prince going

easily at the finish. Nevada Prince has been a model of consistency and must be favoured in the Awanui Handicap tomorrow. The apprentice, Peter Ayres, will again ride him. Mythical Dream and Candid Kate schooled over three brush fences and then ran a circuit on the plough, the last 800 m taking 58.85, and the final 600 m in 43.25. They are both entered for the Farnworth Steeples and Mythical Dream could show up on a heavy track. Paul Nelson’s two jumpers, Storm and Thunderchild, galloped 600 m on

the No. 1 grass in 40.25. Michael Gillies rides Storm in the Russell Memorial Steeples. All Pink showed her pace by cutting out 800 m on the plough in 50s, the last 600 m in 37.85, while Tiffany Chin also went fast over 600 m in 38s. Lenten and Royal Hectare were not hurried when running 600 m in 42.45. Lenten won in very heavy conditions at Hastings in June and must rate a chance again tomorrow. Royal Hectare is a maiden galloper from the Marlene Todd stable which also shows promise.
