Remand for men on 14 joint charges
Two men facing a variety of joint charges relating to incidents . in Coronation Street, Spreydon, on July 20 were remanded to a date in September for the taking of depositions. John Terence Mason, aged 22, a farm labourer (Mr K. J. Grave), and Michael Edward Norman, aged 23, a gardener (Miss E. H. B. Thompson), appeared in the District Court before Messrs C. W. Crawford and E. Blake, Justices of the Peace, yesterday. They were remanded in custody to Thursday when fresh bail applications will be heard. The pair face 14 joint charges of kidnapping, assault, robbing three persons of $529, unlawfully detaining, threats to kill, and unlawfully entering a house in Coronation Street. Norman is also charged with receiving three rifles, to a total value of $l2OO, on July 16. Bail was opposed by Sergeant W. P. Creasey. ESCAPER Wayne Michael Charnley, aged 21, unemployed, was remanded in police custody to Thursday on a charge of escaping from Sunnyside Hospital on Saturday. A duty solicitor, Mr N. J. Dunlop, had sought a return to Sunnyside Hospital to where Charnley had been sent for further psychiatric assessment pending sentence in the High Court on
Thursday on a variety of serious offences. Bail was opposed for his brother, Bruce Franklin Charnley, aged 23, also unemployed. He is charged with threatening to kill a woman and intentionally damaging a telephone cord, both on July 28. ASSAULT OFFENCE A man who, for no apparent reason, assaulted his brother-in-law during a ride home in a car from a party was convicted and remanded for probation report and sentence on August 14. Sergeant Creasey said the offence, admitted by Geoffrey Rex Hodson, aged 27, unemployed, took place at 3.30 a.m. on July 21. He said Hodson was being driven home by his sister and brother-in-law when, for no apparent reason, he began punching the latter. The car was stopped and the assault continued outside the vehicle. The complainant had his head banged against a power pole and he lost consciousness. The complainant later managed to crawl to a house. He suffered a badly bruised face, and eyes, and was hospitalised for observation. When interviewed by the police Hodson said he was unable to remember the reason for the assault.
