Cyclist going for a gold
PA Wellington The Wanganui cyclist, Gary Anderson, aged 17, has the chance to become New Zealand’s first junior world championship medal winner in the individual pursuit when he lines up against Australian Robert Waller in the semifinals in Stuttgart, West Germany, this morning. The other semi-finalists are Arcuras Kasputich, of the Soviet Union, and Thomas Liese, of East Germany. The finals will also be run in the same session. Anderson was the seventh fastest and Auckland’s Craig Connell the fifth fastest of the 16 qualifiers. Anderson then beat an Italian in 3m 31.5 s while Connell beat the second-ranked Australian in 3min 33.2 s to make the quarter-finals. Connell went down to the
second seeded Russian rider in 3:37.73 — the Russian’s time was 3min 30.65. Anderson, though, kept up his good form, beating the East German Blochwitz in 3 min 31.955. Jon Andrews, of Christchurch, finished eleventh in the kilometre time trial in a time of 1:08.02, though he had recorded 1:06.00 in training a few days ago. The sprinters, Wayne Eyre (Christchurch) and Andrews have drawn tough opponents in their first rides on Friday. Eyre will ride against an East German and a Czechoslovakian while Andrews has drawn a Japanese rider and a West German in his first ride. Anderson said from Stuttgart last evening he was hoping to pull out a couple of good rides.
