Kiwi trio in bowls play-off
NZPA-AAP Gold Coast Three New Zealanders are among the last eight in the singles quarter-finals of the Gold Coast winter bowls carnival today. Bruce Ballinger fought from behind to defeat Tom Cummins of Broadbeach 25-21, while his fellow Kiwi, Reg Dalziel, edged ahead of Ralph Samuel of Victoria to win, 2522, at the Palm Beach green. Ivan Kostanich made up the Kiwi threesome with a comfortable 25-12 win over the Victorian, George McCombe, after a handy lead of 14-5 after nine ends. The outright favourite, Rob Parrella, had a battle on his hands in the morning round against the Victorian, Bob Cole. Parrella finally won against Cole 25-22, but soon found himself down 12-3 against Ray Stewart of Kingscliff.
Playing very short ends paid off, and Parella won 13 of the next 15 ends to win by a comfortable 25-15. But the Gold Coast has only one representative left in the quarter-finals. Dick Stephenson, of Mermaid Beach, held George Lindell, of Burleigh Heads, at bay to win, 25-21. Terry Maguire represented New South Wales in the quarterfinals against Vic Reynolds, and took the game, 25-13. The Tasmanian, Ted Murrary came through with a good win over Aub Wehlow of Coorparoo after being level at 13all. Murrary eventually won 25-22. A knee injury forced Tugun’s Henry Porter to concede his game to Col Procopis of St Lucia. The quarter-finals will be played on Thursday morning at Burleigh Heads.
