Wgtn beats Taranaki

PA New Plymouth Wellington scored crucial points in the first half to beat Taranaki, 18-6, in a representative rugby league match on Saturday. The early points proved crucial as the light rain just before half-time turned into a steady downpour, and conditions deteriorated, with the ball becoming very slippery. Taranaki opened the scoring with a penalty goal after only three minutes, but then it was all Wellington, which raced away to lead 14-2 at half-time. The Taranaki wing, Willie Tangira, scored an opportunist i

try in the second spell which was countered by two penalty goals by Gerard Katene, for Wellington. The second-rower, Sam Stewart was the pick of the Wellington forwards, with the stand-off, Katene, dictating play cleverly. For Taranaki, the hooker, Barry Harvey, was outstanding. Scorers' Wellington 18 (Sam Stewart, Mike Kuiti, George Lajpold tries, Gerard Katene conversion, Gerard Katene 2 penalty goals). Taranaki 6 (Willie Tangira try, Alan Jackson penalty).
