China emerging market
China has the potential to be a significant market for New Zealand and this could be good news for Lyttelton Harbour Board, according to the board’s general manager, Mr lan Brokenshire. Two representatives of Chinese shipping companies, Mr He Cheng Ying and Mr A. M. Brundish, visited the board recently on a courtesy and familiarisation visit. The possibility of increased trade Between New Zealand and China was discussed, said Mr Brokenshire. “Virtually the whole world is looking at China as an emerging market of very significant proportions. “We are mindful of the potential for trade and were anxious to show Mr He and Mr Brundish the facilities here,” he said. Three representatives of the Shipping Corporation were also at the meeting. Cargoes are now shipped from New Zealand to Australia
with Shipping Corporation vessels and then transhipped to China by the China Ocean Shipping Company. Another direct service to China is provided by the Sino New Zealand Line, which is a joint venture run by Jebsens New Zealand, Ltd, and Geo. H. Scales. Ltd.
