Unusual poll
Festive Haitians voted—some more than once—in an unusual referendum on the so-called “democratisation” of the 28-year-old Duvalier family rule yesterday. Dissidents called the vote a rigged ploy the Government will use to answer calls for presidential elections. A planned protest march on the National Palace of President-for-Life Jean-Claude Duvalier fell through in the aftermath of police arrests of six youths. Official results were not expected for about three days.—Port-au-Prince.
