Corso raises more
PA Wellington Corso’s annual appeal this year raised $302,300, an increase of 3 per cent on the 1984 appeal, said the administration officer, Mr Derek Wallace. Early results in the collection had indicated the total would drop 5 per cent, he said.
The results appeared to vindicate Corso’s decision to have the Post Office deliver the appeal envelopes, inspite of its being more expensive than using a private company. “In the event, postal returns were more numerous than we dared hope, and indeed are still coming in,” he said.
Mr Wallace said the money raised would go to overseas aid and education programmes while some of it would be used in New Zealand for rural development programmes. With money left at chemist’s shops still to be collected, final figures would not be known until the end of the month, but Mr Wallace said he expected a total of more than $320,000.
