Nuclear-free zones
Sir,—l cannot understand John Bateman’s logic in saying that pacifism would precipitate a nuclear war — not that I advocate unilateral disarmament. Instead he puts his faith in “Star Wars” defence which few besides Reagan do. It is more likely to cause a war through destabilisation. Both Messrs Bateman and Smart assume that only Russia is aggressively belligerent, which I question. Both advocate a strong West. How strong is strong? Both super-Powers are trying to out-arm each other, so neither can agree on an even balance of terror. Consequently must we expect the doubling up of nuclear missiles every few years until the inevitable happens? I thank heaven for our Government, which has been sane and bold enought to cut through the Gordian knot which the politicians of both powers have tied themselves into. The world is in bad need of more positive action like this. — Yours, etc VERNON WILKINSON. July 11, 1985.
