Rate increases

Sir,—Your leading article of July 4 raised questions which one would have expected would have produced some answers or at least comments from the representatives of the people of Merivale on the Christchurch City Council. Nothing has been heard from them and it appears that instead of concerning themselves with the injustice residents are suffering they think their silence will cause the whole thing to quickly fade away. A further increase is indicated next year, plus perhaps GST at 15 per cent. Anyone spending time collecting signatures for the petition being compiled by the Precinct Society soon finds that Merivale is not a ghetto for the rich, but contains much modest housing occupied by elderly people on fixed incomes. To listen to the circumstances which many now face because of the injustice of this vicious increase would move anyone to demand a more equitable rating system. — Yours, etc., B. COLLINS.
