Dare leads to driving award

PA Dunedin A dare between a Whangarei motor rally driver and his wife months ago ended yesterday when he won the Nissan-New Zealand Jaycees Young Driver of the Year competition. Rex Cross, a Post Office worker won from eight other regional finalists. Chris Apse, of Dunedin was second, with Mike Duffy, of Wellington, third. “Everyone was kidding about the bad habits of a rally driver, and my wife was going on about getting a new car,” Cross said after

the presentation. He considers that by winning first prize of a new Nissan Pulsar and gaining most points in the competition, he came out on top on both counts. Cross had competed in motor rallies for several years, and his Post Office job required several hours of driving a day, he said. The competition tested drivers in first aid, the road rules, and driving skills. Competitors were required to sit written and oral tests, as well as drive on the open road and make difficult manoeuvres.
