Timber sale a first

PA Wellington The Forest Service’s first sale of kiln-dried radiata pine to Japan was “clinched,” said the director of the Forest Service’s Commercial Division, Mr Bruce Childs, yesterday. The pine, to be used for furniture manufacture in Japan, was clear grade timber cut to lengths of 600 mm to 900 mm and wrapped for exporting, Mr Childs said.

The Japanese had previously imported squared pine logs from both Chile and New Zealand and cut their own timber for furniture manufacture.

“The squared log will con-, tinue to serve a useful need, but we have to move into other products,” he said. “Kiln-dried radiata pine timber ... has a potential market in Japan where fashionable Western-style products in white wood are gaining an increasing acceptance,” he said. He hoped the order would lead to greater acceptance in Japan of value-added products.
