New caps in hockey side to meet England
PA Wellington Four new caps have been included in the New Zealand women’s hockey team to play England on the artificial surface at Mount Albert Park, Wellington, on August 30 and September 1. They are Julie Rowland (Auckland), Kathy Paterson (Canterbury), Shane Collins (Canterbury) and Robyn Elliot (Auckland). Not surprisingly, given its outstanding provincial record during the last five or six years, Canterbury provides almost half the 14 players. Paterson will join Mary Clinton, the vice-captain, and Isobel Thomson in the defence, and Collins could claim a place in the halves with Nicki Sherriff. Canterbury’s other player is forward Cathy Thompson. The Auckland combination of Liz Millar and Jane Goulding appears most likely to play in the halves. r k
The newcomer, Elliot, has been selected as a forward, as well as long-serving captain Jenny McDonald (Otago), Chris Arthur (Otago) and Aucklanders Jan Martin and Lesley Going (nee Elliot).
Rowlands, a former vicecaptain of the New Zealand junior team, is the sole goalkeeper selected. Such positions are not fixed, however, and part of the New Zealand team’s strength lies in the flexibility of its players. In total there are seven changes from last year’s Olympic squad. Lesley Murdoch, Barbara Tilden, Sandra Mackie, Sue McLeish, Shirley Haig and Robyn Hocking (nee Blackman) were ail unavailable, Jill Smith has been overseas. Hawke’s Bay forward Harina Kohere is missing from the line-up. Two non-travelling reserves have also been named. They are Jocelyn Cronin (Auckland) and Leanne Rogers (Manawatu).
