Bastille Day protest
PA Wellington Diplomats attending a Bastille Day celebration cocktail party at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington were met by a chanting crowd of about 200 Greenpeace demonstrators last evening. Wearing gaunt skull facemasks, the protesters carried banners opposed to French nuclear testing in the Pacific and yelled,
“There are no celebrations here” each time a diplomatic car pulled up outside the venue. The demonstration was loud but orderly and continued until the guests left the two-hour early-evening cocktail party. Many diplomats chose as their exit the rear door that the French ambassadorial party had used to make an early entry.
