Golfer takes pro plunge

PA Wellington The National women’s golf champion, Janice Arnold, has decided to turn professional. This takes effect immediately, and Arnold, aged 23, will attempt to break into the lucrative American professional circuit, through attending a tour qualifying school in Texas. Arnold will leave for Texas in September, and plans to play a mini-tour of four United States tournaments on the way. She made her decision on Saturday after receiving the dates of the qualifying school, while playing the

Matamata 54-hole Open, an event being used to select the New Zealand team to play in the biennial Tasman Cup in Melbourne in October. “It was the date that made me decide to go,” Arnold said. “The school is only held once a year, and I just couldn’t put it off any longer.”

Arnold’s decision ends a distinguished amateur career. A New Zealand representative since 1978, she has won three national stroke play championships and one match play. “It wasn’t an easy decision, but you can go on playing golf and having fun.

I’m tired of being poor, and now it’s time to go for it,” she said. Meanwhile, Jan Cooke (Bay of Plenty) is the only newcomer in the New Zealand women’s golf team to meet Australia in the TasCooke wins a place alongside Liz Douglas (Canterbury), Karrin Duckworth (Auckland), Jan Scandrett (Otago) and Debbie Smith (Nelson), after showing fine form at the recent South Pacific tournament at Surfers Paradise. Scandrett, Smith and Arnold made up the New

Zealand side which contested the Queen Sirikit women’s golf title at Kuala Lumpur in May. Melanie Irvine (Otago) is the non-travelling reserve, and the team will be led by the non-playing captain, Heather Williams (Manawatu-Wanganui). The New Zealand junior women’s team to play Australia, also announced yesterday, is Karen de Lautour (Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay), Tracey Hanson (Wellington), Julie McConnell (Northland), and Mamie McGuire (Auckland). The non-travel-ling reserve is Annette Almond (Bay of Plenty).
