New unit for disturbed prisoners

PA Wellington The Auckland maximum security prison’s new unit for disturbed inmates is now open, said the Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer, on Friday. The builders had handed over the new facility last week. It was now available for disturbed inmates who were considered in need of special care, he said. “The unit forms part of the institution’s hospital and

admission to it will be a matter for a medical decision.” The prison had two fulltime psychiatrists and its medical services were supervised by qualifed medical staff. Mr Palmer said the eightbed unit was the first step in providing better care for disturbed inmates. The proposed special prison at Oakley Hospital was the essential facility for providing an adequate service, he said.
