The “Paraplegic paddlers” take their new hand-cranked catamaran on Wellington Harbour for sea trials in preparation for their attempt to pedal their way across the English Channel in August. The team, from left, Mike O’Brien (Masterton), Craig Short (Palmerston North), Paul Chambers (Napier) and Paul Curry (Palmerston North), has already crossed Cook Strait, Lake Taupo and Lake Wakatipu in a similar craft. The hand-cranked system drives a four-bladed propeller which pushes the craft along at up to five knots. The new boat was built by an engineer, Len Southward, and the channel attempt is being sponsored by the Blueport A.C.T. shipping company.
