Mr G. McN. Campbell
Mr Gordon McNaughton Campbell, who bred, raced and trained many fine jumpers, has died at Okoroire, near Matamata. Veteran racegoers still talk of Valpeen, which in the mid-1980s won two Great Northern
Steeplechases, two Grand National Steeplechases and a Wellington Steeplechase for Mr Campbell. Surpeen also won Mr Campbell a Grand National Steeplechase, in 1947, and the orange and black colours were carried with distinction in the 1960 s by Prettypeen, whose wins include the McGregor Grant Steeplechase and Maramarua Hunt Cup. Mr Campbell, who died on Tuesday in his late seventies, is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
