Marlborough easily beats Buller
PA Blenheim Marlborough opened its national second division championship campaign with a handsome 34-9 defeat of Buller in Blenheim on Saturday. Marlborough’s victory owed much to the attacking edge of its backs with the centre, Paul Phillips, and the second fiveeighth, Paul Karena, in fine form. Phillips was rewarded with a hat-trick of tries, the third coming in the final minute. The full-back, Kevin Colum-
bus, was in fine goalkicking form for the home side, scoring 16 points. The Buller half-back, Malcolm Campbell, played well, frequently harassing his opposite, Nigel Henare, and frustrating Marlborough’s supply of ball. Marlborough led 16-6 at half-time. Scorers: Marlborough 34 (Paul Phillips 3, Terry Wilson, tries; Kevin Columbus 4 penalty goals and 3 conversions) Buller 9 (David Baird 3 penalty goals).
